I thought I’d share a recent success story where I used “Pretend Not to Notice” and “The Broken Record” partner mind-set techniques together. I work with someone that no one likes to work with – and I mean no one. It is amazing that she continues to be employed given the way she treats people. We have to work closely together on a critical and important project. In a recent meeting with senior stakeholders, she chose to make digs at my performance, calling out gaps in communication and errors in my judgement from her perspective. Given how much I value doing a good job and my “people pleaser” habits, it took a lot of effort not to get defensive or start an argument about who was right. Instead, I chose to use your recommended partner mind-set technique, “Pretend Not to Notice”. I acknowledge the comments with, “thank you for that feedback” and continued with the agenda as planned. When I would raise an action point for her team, I’d get complaint and push back. Using “The Broken Record” Partner mind-set technique, I simply restated the required action and why it was important.

Two things happened that gave me the feedback I needed to confirm this was the right approach:

1) I felt good after the meeting. I felt in-control, grounded and confident, despite her attempts to undermine and bully me.

2) I received unsolicited feedback from two of the other participants about how well I handled the meeting.

These partner mind-set techniques have honestly changed my life: I’m more confident, I have lower stress levels and I take on greater challenges than before learning your techniques.
